About The Project:
Since the time the students were in Kindergarten, they have been
studying a variety of music and learning about the dramatic arts.
Every student has studied "character roles" and stage presentation
since they were in Kindergarten...all including costumes and props.
For a final 5th Grade project, the students are studying the music of
the "Old West" from the 1800's to the early 1900's. They
learned
about the importance of music and musical instruments to the
people
and the entertainment industry in the Western United States.
Students then chose an "authentic" ghost town from a list of approved
towns from the Western United States. They studied facts about
their
town and then had to develop a character complete with an occupation
and a crime that reflected life in their chosen town. They chose
performance props and costumes that reflected the character they
created.
Students also learned to play the ukulele and read chord charts that
are equivalent to that of the guitar. Western songs were sung
that
portrayed life in the "Old West."
