Common Cold
The common cold is an upper respiratory illness of acute onset caused by one of at least 90 different viruses.
Symptoms
Symptoms may last anywhere from 2 to 10 days and include runny nose, watery eyes, chills and fatigue. High fever is uncommon in children and rare in adults.
Incubation
Symptoms usually appear within 12 to 72 hours after exposure.
Treatment
While there is no cure for the common cold, you can treat the symptoms with over-the-counter cold remedies. Make sure to never use aspirin products with children. Antibiotics will not treat a virus.
Prevention
The practice of good and frequent handwashing is the most important step in preventing the common cold. It is also extremely important to cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Instead of coughing or sneezing into your hands, try coughing and sneezing on the inside of your elbow. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose. Protect and strengthen your immune system by getting enough rest, eating a variety of foods especially fruits and vegetables and getting regular exercise.
